Boro aiming to end three-game winless run at Kenilworth Road

Middlesbrough are looking to record a first victory at Kenilworth Road since 1974 this evening when they take on newly-promoted Luton Town in the Sky Bet Championship.

Boro have not met The Hatters since 1995 when both clubs competed in the old Division One but you have to turn the clock back another 21 years to find Middlesbrough’s last victory in Bedfordshire.

Alan Foggon was the hero for Boro that day with the midfielder’s goal having been enough to help his side to a 1-0 win.

New Middlesbrough boss Jonathan Woodgate and his side will look to record a first victory at Kenilworth Road since that October meeting almost 45 years ago. Boro have since visited Luton Town on three occasions but have collected just one point from an available nine.

In 1989, a 1-0 win for Luton Town pulled The Hatters to within a point of Middlesbrough in the old Division One table before the two sides drew 1-1 at Kenilworth Road five years later,  John Dreyer netting from the spot for the home side while Robbie Mustoe was on target for Boro.

The Bedfordshire club romped to a 5-1 victory over Boro the last time they hosted the Teessiders. Dwight Marshall scored twice while David Preece and John Hartson were also on target. Middlesbrough’s Paul Wilkinson scored an own goal while their only goal of the game came from Derek Whyte.

Writing a more positive new chapter in the history of Middlesbrough’s long trips down the M1 will not be easy. Luton Town haven’t looked back since ending their non-league nightmare five years ago and with their Kenilworth Road home being a fortress for them in recent seasons, Boro boss Woodgate could not have been handed a much tougher first assignment in the dugout.
